Daily chart: video games. The gaming industry is now more than twice the size of the recorded-music industry, nearly a quarter more than the magazine business and about three-fifths the size of the film industry. It is growing faster than any other form of media. via theeconomist.

  4. Text2Calm: Living in the moment

Update on the Text2Calm project.  So far, it has been a resounding success :).  Judging by the number and consistency of the submissions I have been receiving, it seems that people are taking time out of their day to find a moment that they want to capture forever.

My initial design was to have people plant their feet once a day, find something they appreciate in their immediate surroundings and take a picture of it.  These pictures would be uploaded to a blog later for everyone to view.  However, my project has evolved as such:
    1)  Take a picture once a day of a moment you want to capture
    2)  Send it to me by the end of the day
    3) At the end of the day, I send back the best “in the moment” picture of the day.
The idea behind the project is to take some time out of your day to “smell the roses.”  We often forget to appreciate the small things around us.  This project is a way for people to give themselves an excuse to take a break from work.  An added benefit, through the use of technology, is that people can view others’ submissions.  Competitive people could also be driven to take a good picture for the acknowledgement.

I have been sending triggers once a day at a random time to get people to send me their pictures.  An interesting observation is that many people have been taking the initiative to send me a picture on their own, or send me multiple pictures in a day.  I have not yet polled anyone in the pilot program, but it seems as though it is bringing some happiness into their lives so far :).

So far, “living in the moment” looks like a legitimate way to relieve stress.
